Just to be clear. . . you did get that as a toy for TiJohn, right? And not just as a prop for cute photos?

Ah, but I didn't get the bike. Oh no, his uncle, who lives far far away has begun the spoiling.

I have come to the conclusion that the people who buy the spoiling presents need to also ASSEMBLE the spoiling presents. That, or get them extracted from their containers, which requires a wire cutter and much foul language anymore.

I firmly believe they should expand the definition of holiday torment to include battling with tiny bits of plastic and wire while children dance around you clambering for the fancy new toy that is permanently welded to the stupid cardboard display box. My brother-in-law had to remove 6 sets of plastic/wire not only wrapped around but even through the feet of a baby calf in his son's farm set. That was the little bitty piece! You can imagine what the larger ones were like. Insane!

I actually made [info]scoutsarge's mom take Spenser's toys out of the packaging at Christmas - she has a new understanding of why I groan when they show up as presents now. *grin* This time, I got to sit back and laugh while she struggled with it (usually that's what she does while I struggle), until I gave up and took over so the kids could actually play with their presents. No laughing from her that time!

As a spoiling uncle, I don't think unpackaging new toys is bad idea at all. The rhythm of the giving and getting is badly broken when the excitement of the unwrapping is overshadowed by the boredom of watching the nearest grown-up locate scissors or wire-cutters and begin the long process of the unboxing. I'd much rather see my nephews play with their new things than have to stand there waiting for deboxing, assembly, and batteries.
